USM blasts South Alabama to open regional

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Kirk McCarty dazzled, and the Southern Miss offense frazzled South Alabama pitching.

The Golden Eagles scored 11 runs in the sixth inning, and the Golden Eagles came away with a 14-2 victory Friday in the first game of the Tallahassee Regional at Florida State.

The win earns Southern Miss a seat in the winner’s bracket where it will play the Florida State-Alabama State winner on Saturday (5 p.m., ESPN3) at Dick Howser Stadium. The second-seeded Golden Eagles improved to 41-18 this season while the No. 3 seed Jaguars fall to 40-21.

McCarty, the sophomore left-hander who improved to 8-1, set the tone early.
