A rough night at the office for Southern Miss’ pitching staff led to the team’s first loss of the season.

Facing 18th-ranked South Alabama Tuesday at Eddie Stanky Field in Mobile, the No. 15 Golden Eagles used seven pitchers en route to a 10-9 setback that lasted more than four hours. The bullpen’s struggles spoiled another strong showing by the Southern Miss (3-1) offense, which pounded out 13 hits marking the third time in the season’s first four games it has come up with at least 11.
