Southern Miss took the series victory over UT Martin Saturday, winning the first game of a doubleheader 13-4.
But the Skyhawks avoided the sweep, outslugging the Golden Eagles 13-10 in the finale. It was a disappointing ending to the weekend, as No. 15 Southern Miss dropped to 5-2 and UT Martin improved to 1-6.
The visitors put their foot on the gas early in the third game of the series, scoring three runs in the first inning. The Skyhawks added two runs in the third, fourth and eighth innings and put up a 4-spot in the fifth.
