Southern Miss was leading ULM 7-0 in the first quarter on Sept. 16.
And the Golden Eagles were driving for more points. But in the moments after a 2-yard run by Ito Smith that set up a third-and-1 situation at the Warhawks’ 40-yard line, the visitors were flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Now, it’s third-and-16 and Southern Miss is back on its half of the field. Drive stalled. Golden Eagles punt. Momentum dead.
Fortunately, for Jay Hopson’s team, that flag (nor the other 11 that resulted in 110 penalty yards) kept it from winning the game, 28-17.
