Ray Guy, Southern Miss legend and Hall of Fame punter, dies at 72

Pro Football Hall of Famer and Southern Miss football legend Ray Guy died Thursday morning following what a university statement described as a "lengthy illness."

He was 72 years old.

Best known for his punting exploits, William Ray Guy's athletic prowess was expansive during his time as a Golden Eagle. From 1970-72, Guy served as a defensive back, punter and kicker for the Southern Miss football team. His eight interceptions in 1972 are still the most in a single season in school history.

"He's a true blue legend," Southern Miss football coach Will Hall said.
