Mullens’ strong mindset leads to transformation

HATTIESBURG - After a year and a half as the unquestioned starting quarterback for the Southern Miss football team, Nick Mullens was one of the most polarizing figures within the program.

Some loved him. Some did not. Some detested him.

It wasn’t difficult to understand why. In six starts and three appearances on mop-up duty as a true freshman in 2013, Mullens threw 13 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Last season, the Alabama native reduced his interception total (12) but saw a drop in touchdown passes (12).

His detractors often criticized his arm strength. Mullens was also accused of not being mobile enough, as he was sacked more than 30 times as a sophomore.
