Jay Hopson almost couldn’t believe his eyes after the first glance.
A September bye week, three weeks into the season, isn’t exactly ideal for most college football teams after all.
“I’ll be honest, at first, I was borderline mad about it,” the Southern Miss coach said. “I was like, ‘I don’t want an open date week after three weeks.’ I begged not to have it that way.”
Now, though, Hopson is singing the scheduling gods’ praises. The Golden Eagles (2-1) began training camp in late July, two weeks earlier than normal.
