HATTIESBURG — Michael and Jack Abraham walked silently across a football field. The silence continued through the car ride down historic Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, N.C. Finally, to break the mood, the father and son stopped for cheeseburgers.

“Well that wasn’t too fun to hear,” Michael Abraham said to his son, then a freshman in high school.

“No it wasn’t,” Jack Abraham replied back.

Michael could sense the feeling of defeat in his son.
