Van Dijk, Gabbiadini crucial to Southampton bid for European football

"Put your chequebook away, Jurgen."

"Find another centre back, Pep. Southampton are no longer a selling club."

At least that is the message chairman Ralph Krueger has been sending out to Messrs Klopp and Guardiola in the wake of Sunday's heartbreaking EFL Cup final defeat to Manchester United.

Southampton fans have been given such promises before; like when Ronald Koeman wasn't going to up sticks to Everton or when Les Reed said Nathaniel Clyne was close to signing a new contract, before he moved to Liverpool.

Even after former captain Jose Fonte handed in a transfer request, director of football Reed publicly insisted he would only be allowed to leave once a replacement was signed.
