Former Saints forward Martin Chivers, who died aged 80 on Wednesday, has been remembered as "a real local lad" who "moved like a Rolls Royce".
Born in Regents Park in Southampton, Chivers scored 108 times for his boyhood club between 1962 and 1968, before being sold to Tottenham £125,000 - a British record at the time.
Duncan Holley, a Southampton FC historian, called him a "powerful player" and said it was "good to see a local boy do so well".
He made 189 appearances for Southampton FC and the club said it was "deeply saddened to hear of his passing".
