Southampton 1-3 Brighton: James Ward-Prowse's late strike fails to salvage a point for Saints, as Brighton go sixth after an impressive display at St Mary's

Brighton continued their promising start to the season on Boxing Day with a convincing 3-1 win over Southampton.

Adam Lallana opened the scoring with a well-placed header against his former club, before Romain Perraud deflected the ball helplessly into his own net to give the visitors a comfortable lead at half time.

Solly March added another for Brighton after the break, and James Ward-Prowse gave the hosts a glimmer of hope late on but could not salvage a point.

The result moved Brighton up to sixth in the Premier League, while Southampton remain in the relegation zone.
