Ally McCoist says Bruno Guimaraes showed 'no malice' in the challenge which led to the Newcastle midfielder being sent off against Southampton, but admits Samuel Edozie is 'very fortunate' to have avoided a broken ankle

Ally McCoist claimed Bruno Guimaraes had 'no malice' in his challenge on Southampton's Samuel Edozie, but admitted the Newcastle midfielder deserved to be sent off in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg.

Edozie had beaten the Brazilian to the ball in the second half, with Guimaraes' boot planted onto the Southampton forward's ankle after arriving late for the challenge.

Guimaraes was initially shown a yellow card by referee Paul Tierney, before the official ungraded the punishment to a straight red following consultation with VAR.
