Eight quarters into the season, it has brandished both horsepower and a hiccup or two. At this stage, USF's modified offensive engine appears capable of navigating both the straightaways and tricky curves on its remaining schedule.

Not that the work beneath the hood is complete. One gear is sticking, and Coach Willie Taggart would like to get it corrected before the proverbial pit stop that is the upcoming bye week.

Which is to say, he wants to throw more to the receivers, before the whole system throws a rod.

"We've got some pretty good receivers," Taggart said.
