Passengers stuck on Orlando Eye, firefighters on scene

Firefighters are helping riders off The Orlando Eye, a 400-foot observation wheel in the tourist district, which got stuck with riders aboard late Friday afternoon.

The wheel stopped functioning about 4:45 p.m. Friday, stranding an unknown number of people, said Kat Kennedy, a spokeswoman for Orange County Fire Rescue.

Firefighters were ready to climb up and rescue people, but tweets from the scene on International Drive indicate the attraction has been stopping and starting. Firefighters are helping people off the gondolas, Kennedy said.

About 5:40 p.m., a rider tweeted, "yes we finally started moving! hopefully we get down soon.
