Fleeing man who jumped in canal is part of prolific burglary gang, Sheriff's Office says

A man who investigators say is part of a South Florida gang responsible for "hundreds" of burglaries is being held on a bond of $150,000 after being pulled from a canal following a foot chase.

Leon Baker Crawford, 18, of Hallandale Beach, was wanted by Pembroke Pines police for an unarmed home invasion robbery on May 25, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office arrest report filed in the case.

"The latest home invasion involved an 8-year-old and a disabled woman," Sheriff's Detective Javier Duran told Broward Judge Robert Lee at Crawford's first appearance in court Tuesday.

Working with Pembroke Pines police, the Sheriff's Burglary Apprehension Team spotted Crawford in Lauderhill on Monday.
