On the Beat: Overhauled Gamecocks defense ready to ‘shock the country’

COLUMBIA — Worried about a repeat of the defensive debacle that was South Carolina’s 2014 season? Skai Moore is here to put your mind at ease.

“That’s not going to happen,” the junior linebacker said after Thursday’s practice, USC’s first in shoulder pads. “We’re really going to come out there and shock the country. Everybody has us pinned to come out and have the same type of season, but that’s not going to happen.”

The Gamecocks finished next to last in the SEC last season in total defense, allowing a school-record 395 points and managing a league-worst 14 sacks — just one fewer than Jadeveon Clowney had on his own in 2012.
