COLUMBIA — Chad Holbrook wants to get Brandon McIlwain into a game. But the Gamecocks’ head baseball coach hasn’t been able to find the right opportunity for the USC outfielder and quarterback, who’s missed much of this season due to his duties with the football team.
“I wanted to get him in there and get him some at-bats, but the games have been too close and I’ve been a little gun-shy to do it. He missed a lot of time. He wasn’t here a lot. And I can’t just throw him in there in front of T.J. Hopkins, who’s been here every day and produced some results,” Holbrook told reporters after USC’s 3-1 victory over Presbyterian on Tuesday night.
