Despite his baseball potential, USC's Brandon McIlwain a football player first

COLUMBIA — Brandon McIlwain took part in his first practice in a South Carolina uniform on Friday — and he did it on the Gamecocks’ baseball field.

The two-sport star is expected to contend for USC’s starting quarterback job in spring football practice, but until then he’s wearing the No. 44 and playing outfield on the Gamecocks’ baseball team, which opened practice Friday in advance of the season opener Feb. 19 against Albany at Founders Park.

McIlwain, a native of Newtown, Pa., enrolled early at USC so he could take part in spring football practice and play baseball.
