South Alabama kicker Gavin Patterson is one of 180 national semifinalists for the William V. Campbell Trophy, the so-called "Academic Heisman."
Patterson, a senior from Bourbonnais, Illinois, has been a three-time member of the Sun Belt Conference Commissioner's list. A third-year starter for the Jaguars, he was a first-team All-Sun Belt pick as a junior and was also selected to the preseason all-conference team this year.
Patterson is one of just two FBS players from the state of Alabama on the Campbell semifinalists list, along with Alabama tight end Hale Hentges. Lower-division players on the list include Alabama State long snapper Dylan Renaker and Birmingham-Southern defensive back Matthew Byers.
