South Alabama signed junior-college running Tywun Walters on Wednesday, the first day mid-year football transfers can sign national letters of intent.
The 5-foot-11, 215-pound Walters rushed for exactly 1,000 yards and 12 touchdowns in 12 games at Northwest Mississippi Community College this past season, earning first-team All-MACJC honors. The Lambert, Mississippi, native redshirted at Louisiana Tech in 2014, meaning he will have two years to play two at South Alabama.
Walters fills an immediate need for the Jaguars, who graduate two of their top three running backs in seniors Tyreis Thomas and Dami Ayoola. Top rusher Xavier Johnson is expected back for his senior season in 2017, but there will be opportunities for playing time behind him.
