South Alabama catcher Jared Barnes was selected by the Miami Marlins in the 2017 MLB draft on Tuesday.
Barnes, a junior, went at No. 239 overall in the eighth round. Should he turn pro, the recommended slot bonus for that pick is $159,700.
Barnes, 21, was a first-team All-Sun Belt Conference pick in 2017, when he batted .320/.416/.605 with 13 home runs and 50 RBIs in 51 games. He missed the postseason after breaking a finger on his throwing hand during the final regular-season series against Troy.
Barnes was the second player with South Alabama ties to be drafted on Tuesday.
