South Alabama baseball standout Drew LaBounty sidelined after foul tip to eye

South Alabama shortstop Drew LaBounty fouled a ball off his own eye during Friday's intrasquad scrimmage, causing him to be hospitalized as of Saturday afternoon, Jaguars coach Mark Calvi confirmed to AL.com.

LaBounty, a fifth-year senior, is in his fourth year as the Jaguars' starting shortstop and was a preseason All-Sun Belt Conference selection this season. Reached via text message on Saturday, Calvi declined to elaborate further on LaBounty's condition or to indicate how long he might be sidelined.

South Alabama, ranked No. 24 nationally by Baseball America and the preseason favorite to win the Sun Belt, opens the 2018 season Feb.
