South Alabama might wait until after the second scrimmage of the fall Aug. 19 to name its starting quarterback, head coach Joey Jones said this week.
Incumbent starter Dallas Davis continues to be on a "pitch count" following offseason shoulder surgery, which caused him to miss the spring. That leaves extra reps for fellow juniors Cole Garvin and Evan Orth, who got the majority of the work in the spring.
The Jaguars scrimmage at Ladd-Peebles Stadium on Aug. 12 and again on Aug. 19, and Jones said it could be after the latter that a decision on the team's Game 1 starter will be made.
