South Alabama head coach Joey Jones on Tuesday named junior Cole Garvin the Jaguars' starting quarterback for the Sept. 2 season-opener against Ole Miss.
Garvin beat out fellow junior Dallas Davis, the Jaguars' primary starter in 2016. Davis had offseason surgery on his throwing shoulder, and Jones admitted that Davis' health might have been a factor in his performance this fall.
"We're going to go with Cole Garvin," Jones said. "Cole has had a great camp -- so have Dallas Davis and Evan Orth -- but right now we feel like the best decision for our football team is to go with Cole.
