England left Jamie Vardy on the bench and started wide players Raheem Sterling and Adam Lallana for the Group B game against Russia in the European Championship in Marseille.

England captain Wayne Rooney was set to start in a midfield role in a 4-5-1 formation.

Russia had three forwards in the team - Alexander Kokorin, Artyom Dzyuba and Fyodor Smolov, who was last season's top scorer in the Russian league.

There was a first competitive start for defensive midfielder Roman Neustaedter, who previously played for Germany in friendlies and only received a Russian passport last month.
