JOHANNESBURG (AP) -- Opposition parties in South Africa have called for 2010 World Cup organizer Danny Jordaan to resign as the football association head after he was appointed mayor of his hometown by the ruling African National Congress.
The Democratic Alliance and Economic Freedom Fighters say Jordaan's role as ANC mayor for the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality would mean a conflict of interest with his position as president of the South African Football Association.
The ANC announced that Jordaan would be the new mayor. His appointment has to be confirmed at a council meeting.
The opposition DA said it would mean Jordaan, a former ANC member of parliament, would become ''the most politically partisan sport administrator in the country.
