As the Copa America begins its quarterfinal stage what strikes you most about this competition is familiarity. All but Bolivia reached the last eight four years ago and five of the eight have been ever-present at this stage since 2004.
Some would see this as predictable and others as unsurprising, a function of simple arithmetic in a confederation with only 10 teams, where two countries need to be invited to make up the numbers at each tournament.
And, sure, it's both. But to some of us, it's also deeply satisfying, because familiarity breeds rivalries and teams who have few secrets from each other force innovation.
