It has finally been made official: Club León is out of the Club World Cup after an appeal to CAS who made the final decision. The original ruling came down in March where León and Grupo Pachuca vowed to challenge the ruling. Unfortunately, it was not meant to be for ‘La Fiera’ and this brings up a big point that has been argued for years in Mexico. Multi-club ownership has been a hot topic in Liga MX for a long time as many clubs share the same owner. Is it finally time to dissolve multi-club ownership in Mexico?
Here’s a breakdown of the clubs and their owners:
Grupo Orlegi - Atlas and Santos
TV Azteca/Grupo Salinas - Mazatlán FC and Puebla
Grupo Caliente - Tijuana and Querétaro
Grupo Pachuca - Pachuca and Club León
Six of those eight clubs ended up at the bottom of the table at the end of the Clausura 2025 with Pachuca and León as the only ones with a spot in the liguilla.
