The 2019 summer transfer window has seen record levels of spending by La Liga clubs who have paid more then €1 billion to bring in new players for the first time.
The total spending comes to €1.37bn (double what they spent in 2017) and is not too far away from the Premier League’s total of £1.55bn, according to a report from Deloitte’s Sports Business Group.
Of course Barcelona contributed heavily to that figure. The Spanish champions’ most expensive arrival was Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid for €120 million.
They could have added to that figure too by bringing in Neymar, but a mega-money deal for the Brazilian failed to materialise despite being talked about all summer.
