Judge’s Ruling Relegates One Spanish Team and Saves Another

MADRID — Two months after the end of the Spanish soccer season, the action continues to play out, not on the field but in the courtroom.

On Tuesday, a judge from Spain’s national court ruled that Elche should be relegated from the top division to the second tier of Spanish soccer because of its financial problems, even though it finished 13th out of 20 teams last season in La Liga.

The ruling means that Eibar, the smallest club in La Liga, which finished 18th last season, will avoid relegation and maintain its unlikely presence among the elite of Spanish soccer.
