How Real Madrid, Chelsea and Bayern have helped the world's refugees - and how some clubs snubbed them

The world of soccer came together to help people fleeing countries and arriving on European shores, writes Jelena Cubel.

While European politicians have been squabbling over what to do with the hundreds of thousands refugees fleeing war-torn countries such as Syria, European soccer clubs, players and fans have donated millions in an overwhelming display of empathy toward the new arrivals.

The goodwill started in Germany – the country that is the first-choice destination for many desperate asylum seekers – where Bundesliga fans held up banners saying 'refugees welcome.' Bayern Munich donated 1 million euros to charity and announced plans to open a camp for refugees settling in Bavaria.
