Steven Gerrard says November's bench role against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu accelerated his Liverpool exit.
Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard knew he had to leave Anfield when he was left on the bench for the club's UEFA Champions League trip to Real Madrid.
Gerrard was named among the substitutes and only played the final 20 minutes as Liverpool lost 1-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu in November.
Recalling the shock decision, Gerrard — who is preparing to link up with the reigning MLS Cup champion LA Galaxy — said it ultimately signalled the end of his long-standing association with his boyhood club.
