UNIVERSITY PARK -- SMU's receiver corps has proven to be two- or three-deep across the field. The running back situation features 3-4 players to split carries. The offensive line still has question marks, but fewer than in recent fall camps.
So that leaves the quarterback position to be settled before the season opener against Stephen F. Austin. Redshirt sophomore Ben Hicks entered camp as the returning starter and favorite to begin 2017 in the same role. Arkansas transfer Rafe Peavey and Pearl River (Miss.) Community College recruit D.J. Gillins sit behind Hicks on the depth chart.
Two weeks into camp, head coach Chad Morris maintains that Hicks is in pole position.
