SMU spring football notebook: Brandon Benson shines, Braeden West carted off and more

UNIVERSITY PARK -- Here are some notes and observations from SMU's spring practice on Saturday.

--Receiver Brandon Benson was the top performer at practice. He made a couple of really nice catches, one of which came between Kevin Johnson and Elijah McQueen in the front corner of the end zone. McQueen did get some redemption later as he made an interception. Johnson also had a nice play where he chased running back Xavier Jones down from behind to make a tackle.

--Running back Braeden West was carted off the field after a leg injury. Head coach Sonny Dykes did not have a full update on his status but said he was optimistic because it appeared to be a hamstring issue and not a knee injury.
