SMU football notes: A career day, and plenty of milestones to go with it

MEMPHIS - Running back Xavier Jones had a career day in SMU’s 66-45 loss to Memphis.

The junior back, who missed most of last season with a hamstring injury, rushed 20 times for 175 yards, a new career high, and two touchdowns. He broke off runs of 59 and 44 yards, with the 59-yarder being another career high.

Jones was unable to return in the fourth quarter after getting injured on his final touchdown run. Head coach Chad Morris said Jones was simply “banged up.”

--SMU quarterback Ben Hicks’ 218 passing yards on Saturday moved him past the 3,000 yards passing mark for the 2017 season.
