Late in overtime against Cincinnati on Saturday night, SMU’s chances didn’t look very good. A sack and a fumbled had moved the team backward, and the Mustangs faced a fourth down and 26 outside of field goal range. Coming away with no points wasn’t an option, yet it seemed like an inevitability.
Neither Ben Hicks, nor Trey Quinn got the message. On fourth down Hicks sprinted right and heaved the ball downfield right as he reached the line of scrimmage. 28 yards downfield, Trey Quinn went up over a Cincinnati defender and came down with the football just past the first down marker.
