SMU and Baylor made it interesting for the first half and into the second before Baylor pulled away for the win. SMU came out swinging with their first play by hitting Courtland Sutton for 46 yards on play No. 1 of the Chad Morris era for the touchdown. That touchdown answered Baylor's four-play opening drive for a touchdown.
From there, the teams traded touchdowns in the first quarter until Baylor led 21-14. Then Baylor used a 36-yard KD Cannon touchdown to build a 28-14 lead. That's when SMU's defense shut down Baylor for the second quarter and allowed the offense to close the gap to seven points.
