How Sonny Dykes' 'strange decisions' paid off in SMU's win over Navy

UNIVERSITY PARK - The gambling side of SMU coach Sonny Dykes came out on Saturday in a memorable 31-30 overtime win against Navy at Gerald J. Ford Stadium.

Dykes, looking for touchdowns rather than field goals, went for it on fourth down five times. He changed quarterbacks, going from freshman William Brown to deposed starter Ben Hicks, for overtime.

At the finish, Dykes played for the win rather than ask his beat-up team to go through another overtime period.

Dykes brought out “Oregon,’’ a deception-based play ideal for two-point conversions. It worked, with Hunter Thedford catching Hicks’ throw to end an eight-game losing streak to Navy.
