He went 36-43 in his tenure with the Mustangs and led SMU to its first bowl appearance since the death penalty was imposed on the program in the 1980s. He resigned after SMU went 0-2 to start the 2014 season. SMU finished that year 1-11 and hired Chad Morris to be its new head coach.
