SMU took its first loss of the season Wednesday night, falling 61-58 to Northern Iowa in its first contest of the Battle 4 Atlantis.
The Mustangs’ schedule had been loaded up with easy games until the tournament, but the team met a tough opponent on Wednesday. The Panthers stifled SMU’s offense for most of the night, as the Mustangs shot just 39 percent from the field.
Going into halftime, things looked really bleak for SMU. UNI held an eight-point lead, forcing 10 turnovers and limiting SMU to just 23 points. The Panthers used a 16-0 to overcome an early SMU lead and build a large one of their own.
