SMU is about a week away from its first bowl game since 2012. To get there, SMU needed some players to take their games to a whole new level. Here's a look at five Mustangs who exceeded expectations in 2017.

1. Wide receiver Trey Quinn

The LSU transfer was supposed to be a complimentary receiver to standout Courtland Sutton. What was a pleasant surprise to SMU was that Quinn quickly came to stand on equal ground next to Sutton. Quinn led the FBS in receptions and was 10th in receiving yards. He was SMU's most reliable weapon on third down, and his fourth-and-26 catch against Cincinnati was the trademark moment of SMU's season.
