That was UConn's rushing total against SMU, a measly amount for an offense that needed to establish the run game to win. The Huskies averaged -0.2 yards for its 36 carries. Take away quarterback Bryant Shirreffs and his -36 yards on 10 carries and UConn's total only goes up to 28 yards on 26 carries. This is the kind of identity SMU wanted to establish on its defense.

"Going in [the coaches] wanted to establish from the spring, you cannot run the football on the SMU defense," senior defensive end Justin Lawler said.
