Steve Spurrier was gone from the South Carolina sideline, but his presence wasn’t missing from Williams-Brice Stadium when interim head coach Shawn Elliott held a white visor above his head before leading his team onto the field against Vanderbilt on Saturday afternoon.
In the first game not coached by the visor-wearing Head Ball Coach since 2004, the South Carolina Gamecocks came out riding an emotional roller coaster and steadied themselves enough in the second half to come back and beat the Commodores, 19-10.
What the win means for South Carolina: In the hole at 2-4 without their head coach of more than a decade, the Gamecocks needed to take a step in the right direction.
