Stefan Frei could return from concussion

Stefan Frei remains in concussion protocol, but a final test was scheduled to be performed on Tuesday that could make him eligible to play in Wednesday’s virtual must-win at the Colorado Rapids.

“If he passes, he’ll be able to play,” Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer told reporters.

Frei was hurt on the final play of the Sounders’ 1-1 tie with the Chicago Fire when Alan Gordon barreled into him on a cross.

If Frei can’t go, the job would again fall to Bryan Meredith. The veteran goalkeeper made his first MLS start since 2012 — when he made 12 appearances for the Sounders — and had several strong saves in Saturday’s loss to the Portland Timbers, but still let in three goals.
