Winning their first MLS Cup title last December gained the Sounders entry into next year’s CONCACAF Champions League round where beating a Mexican club team will be key to advancing.
So, the “friendly” Saturday night against Liga MX side Club Necaxa was viewed by Sounders management as a chance for more than giving extra playing time to several non-starters while club mainstays undertake World Cup qualifiers with various national teams. Prior to Saturday’s resulting 1-1 draw, the Sounders hoped to familiarize their team with a bit of the Mexican style, hoping it pays off next year when the Champions League matches begin.
