Seattle Sounders win first MLS Cup in franchise history in dramatic penalty kick shootout over Toronto FC

TORONTO – The Seattle Sounders won their first MLS Cup in franchise history in dramatic and frigid fashion on Saturday night, topping Toronto FC 5-4 in a penalty shootout at BMO Field.

Center back Roman Torres buried the decisive penalty for the Sounders after the teams played to a scoreless 120 minutes in the second-coldest MLS Cup in league history. Brad Evans, Andreas Ivanschitz, Joevin Jones and Nicolas Lodeiro also converted their penalties and goalkeeper Stefan Frei made one save in the shootout.

TFC’s Justin Morrow missed his chance of his crossbar in what proved to be the decisive final misstep for the Reds, who became the second consecutive team to los the MLS Cup Final at home.
