Seattle Sounders seek to 'keep the train going' after huge win against rival Portland Timbers

PORTLAND – For the Seattle Sounders, Sunday evening’s 1-0 Cascadia victory over the Portland Timbers at Providence Park was a cathartic result on multiple fronts.

Thanks to a 76th-minute game-deciding own goal spearheaded by a charging run and cross from defender Kim Kee-hee, the Sounders got their first victory in Portland since August 2014 – a feat that can be considered an important psychological milestone. It was also their first victory over Portland in 2018, coming off a 1-0 road loss on May 13 and a 3-2 defeat at CenturyLink Field on June 30.

Speaking inside a jubilant locker room after the match, Sounders midfielder Cristian Roldan admitted that the three-point result in the house of his team’s biggest rival had an especially sweet taste to it.
