Review panel overturns red card to Sounders defender Roman Torres

Sounders center back Roman Torres was incensed last Sunday when handed a red card and automatic one-game suspension for denying Jermaine Jones of the Los Angeles Galaxy an obvious goal scoring opportunity via contact.

The Sounders did something about it, appealing the decision to the Independent Panel with a heavy package of video highlight clips of the incident. On Thursday, the three-member panel unanimously overturned the decision and Major League Soccer reinstated Torres for Saturday’s game in Dallas.

Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer said earlier in the week that though the referee’s call was initially subject to video review on the field and upheld, the Sounders tried to “challenge that with different camera angles and some of the stuff we picked up over the last day and a half.
