The Reign got the better of the Thorns in their season opener on July 5, where Reign FC stayed organized and gave up limited chances to Portland before striking on a poorly cleared ball just outside the 18-yard box. The game did not feature the clubs’ U.S. players, who were still competing in the World Cup.
