In match of missed opportunities, Sounders draw Timbers to remain atop Western Conference

In a familiar script, the Sounders once again outplayed an opponent but failed to finish enough chances to avoid anything but a draw.

The Sounders dominated most of Sunday night’s first place battle with the archrival Portland Timbers, taking an early lead on a Cristian Roldan strike. But a penalty kick goal gave the Timbers the chance they needed to get back in the game and the Sounders never could free themselves from a 1-1 draw after that.

It was the first time these teams had met when ranked 1-2 in the standings this late in the season.
